It’s been a fabulously busy, learning filled year at Alton Darby and Horizon Media Centers. Between the two schools, I’ve taught over 700 literacy, inquiry, and technology classes and we’ve assisted nearly 40,000 students on a walk-in basis. To help keep the students interested in reading over the summer, children’s librarians from the Hilliard Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library will be here to present a short assembly in their Summer Reading Club on May 30^th. Here’s a message from them:

“Columbus Metropolitan Library’s 2012 Summer Reading Club, Have a Blast! Read, is coming soon! Research shows that children perform better at school if they’ve kept up their reading skills over the summer. One way to make sure that kids continue to read and have fun doing it is to sign up for Summer Reading Club!

This summer is sure to be a blast with over 1,000 events planned throughout all 21 branches like magic shows, story times and sing-alongs. Kids can read any books they like and earn cool prizes, including a messenger bag, coupons, and more! Beginning June 9, stop in at the Hilliard Library (or any of the 21 Columbus Metropolitan Library locations) and sign up to share in the fun.

Have a Blast and keep your child reading this summer!”

Don’t forget to say “Thank You” to your bus driver…

Columbus – Stan Heffner, State Superintendent of public instruction, reminds Ohioans that Monday, May 7, 2012, is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in Ohio.

“Safely transporting students to and from school is vital to education,” said Heffner. “The professionalism of Ohio’s 15,000 school bus drivers is why the school bus remains – by far – the safest way for students to get to school.

Ohio school bus drivers transport over 900,000 students daily, travelling 1 million miles per day to accomplish that task. At the same time, the school bus safety record is unsurpassed, greatly exceeding that of automobiles, commercial buses and even passenger trains,

To qualify to become a school bus driver in Ohio, an applicant must complete pre-service training and certified on-bus training, pass a driving evaluation and obtain a commercial driver’s license. In addition, drivers must pass pre-employment background and drug screenings. Drivers are required to be recertified every six years.

The Ohio Legislature designated the first Monday in May as School Bus Driver Appreciation Day to “increase public recognition of the important function that school bus drivers serve in safely transporting children to and from school.”

April has been an exciting month here at Alton Darby. Two of our staff members were recently recognized for the outstanding work they do with students on a daily basis.

Heather Lambright, 4th grade teacher, was recognized as Alton Darby’s “Teacher of Excellence” by the Hilliard Alumni Association.

Lori Jewell, a special education teaching assistant, was recognized by our school district as one of the ten “Celebrating Excellence Honorees”.

Both individuals were nominated by colleagues and parents. The selection of winners was based on criteria that exemplify these awards. Congratulations again to Mrs. Lambright and Mrs. Jewell.

News from the Media Center

March is filled with activity at Alton Darby’s Media Centers! Kindergarteners are now checking out 2 books, one fiction and the other nonfiction. Ask them to tell you the difference. We also are working on sound and making musical instruments. First graders are learning about goods and services, and are ready to blog about their trip to the pond.

Second graders are studying about famous Americans using a variety of sources, including biographies and websites. Third graders are creating SmartBoard documents on rocks and soil. In fourth grade, students have finished a unit on wild weather and are learning about fantasy books. Fifth graders are using the SmartBoard to study math concepts and will be starting a life science unit soon. At Alton Darby, some 4^th graders are part of a reading enrichment group, sharing the book Coraline.

There’s lots more learning and growing to come this year. We love having the opportunity to be a part of your child(ren)’s education teaching 21^st century skills.
